This kind of diabetes is diagnosed only in pregnant women. Although the number of women who develop this kind of diabetes is not very high, it is on the rise. Most of the women who get diagnosed with this condition are within 24-28 weeks of there pregnancy.

Normal symptoms of this disease are-thirst, hunger and tiredness, but most of them go unnoticed during pregnancy. In a lost of cases this kind of condition normally disappears after the delivery of the baby.

It is important that this condition is controlled by having a good gestational diabetes diet, to keep the blood sugar levels under control during the stages of pregnancy. A good doctor or dietician can normally help develop a diet plan, suited to your requirements.

A good gestational diabetes diet plan should include some or most of the elements below:

-Cholesterol intake should be kept to a minimum, normally no more 300 mg of cholesterol should consumed in a day. Avoids foods like egg yolks.

-Have lots of fruits and vegetables throughout the day, avoid fruit juices and dry fruits.

-Avoid foods with too much fats in them, no more 10% of your daily intake of calories should come from saturated fats.

-Have lots of fiber, which can be mostly found in foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

-Reduce your intake of salt as much as possible. Go for foods which have less than 140mg of sodium in them or less than 5% of DV(Daily value) of sodium in them.

-Alcohol should be cut down to a minimum. Soda’s also include a lot of sugar in them and should be avoided.

-Also have some decent amount of carbohydrates in your diet. Some good sources of carbs are- rice,bread,pasta,fruits and vegetables. Although do not overdo it with your carb intake, keep it in moderation.

-Eat at the same time everyday and never skip any meals. Keep a gap of no more than 3 hrs between each of your meals.

In the end remember the major focus of your gestational diabetes diet plan is keep your blood sugar levels in the normal range. Always consult and follow your dietitian’s plan and keep them updated on any adverse symptoms you may be having.
